Sweet Pongal is called “Sakkarai Pongal” in Tamil. It is traditionally prepared by the Tamil community fervently, during Pongal festival. A common recipe for Makar Sankranti

1 cup of rice

½ cup of milk

¼ cup of moong dal ( dry roasted )

½ cup of ghee

1 ½  cup of jaggery

3-4 cardamoms

¼ cup of cashew nuts

¼  cup of raisins

Frying Pan, Kadai and Pressure Cooker

Step By Step Method

  • The rice and moong dal are soaked for 10 minutes. The rice, moong dal, milk and ghee are cooked with 2 ½ cups of water till the contents become tender.

In a separate pan water is added to the jaggery and heated till it comes to a syrup consistency. This is strained to get rid of the impurities of the jaggery.

The raisins, cardamoms and cashew nuts are roasted in a teaspoon of ghee till they turn golden.

Now the jaggery syrup is stirred into the mashed up rice dal mixture. Finally the roasted nuts with the cardamoms are introduced and gently stirred. Now the “sakkarai Pongal” can be savoured hot.
