The very sight of sizzling chole being constantly turned around in the tavas of roadside chaat-wallahs is enough of trigger the gastronomic juices! would it not be wonderful to recreate that wonderful tava chole experience at your own garden cocktail party?


  • 2 cans of chickpeas

  • 2-3 tbsp of chole masala

  • 1 tbsp chili powder

  • 1 tbsp garam masala

  • 1 tbsp coriander cumin powder

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 1 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)

  • 2 tbsp crushed ginger and garlic

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 2 tomatoes, chopped

  • For garnish

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 2-3 tbsp chopped cilantro

  • Lime juice (optional)

  • Salt as required

Step By Step Method

  • Step 1

    You can use the raw chole for this recipe. Then you need to soak it overnight and then boil it with salt and turmeric powder. Drain and use as required.

    Step 2

    Wash the canned chickpeas very well. Add them to a mixing bowl. Then add chole masala, chilli powder, garam masala, coriander cumin powder and salt.

    Step 3

    Mix it all together and let it marinate.

    Step 4

    Meanwhile, heat oil in a Prestige Tawa, Fry ajwain (carom seeds), ginger and garlic. Saute till the raw smell disappears. Now add and saute onions till they turn translucent.

    Step 5

    Then add the tomatoes and salt. Cook till the tomatoes are done. Next add the marinated chickpeas.


    Give it a good mix. Saute for another 2-3 minutes till all the masala are cooked. Lastly add chopped raw onions and cilantro for garnish. Add lime juice if you wish, before serving.Your Tawa Chole is ready!
